Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

11. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
Year: 1999

Toward the end of the first Star Wars trilogy, George Lucas developed a penchant for characters that were more like Muppets than fully-fleshed characters (i.e., Jabba, Salacious Crumb, the Ewoks). So when it was time to bring back the sci-fi universe, he did himself one better, and developed a penchant for jawdropping ethnic stereotypes. From the bumbling carefree Jamaican minstrel (Jar Jar Binks) to the hook-nosed shyster merchant (Watto), he outdid any of his Jedi fuckery by a long shot. May the force (of racism) be with you.

I never liked Jar Jar either, I thought it was too silly, and ruined the story. Racist? Nope...unless you yourself are a racist and think all islanders talk like that.

Watto? If he is a stereotype, its not one I'm familiar with, unless you're talking about shrewd businessmen, but then aren't you discriminating against them then?

You forgot to include the Chinese influenced "Merchant" race with a very "ching chong" style accent.

I thought they were running out of alien accents and tried an African Carribbean one with a little alien. I don't know...

R.O.U.S. - isn't it saying the opposite? Anakin was a white dude trying to be a taller, more authoritative black dude. Oh and evil, too.

Racial stereotypes are not wrong. Different people have different tendencies in behavior. Instead of cringing whenever someone notices this, you can save yourself the heightened blood pressure and get over yourself.

just becuase their aliens doesn't mean the characters aren't based on real racial stereotypes. you have to be trying pretty hard to not see jar jar as one computer generated step away from minstrelsy.

This list is obnoxious and whoever wrote it was seriously short on brain power that day. How could this movie be racist - for starters it sucked, and more than half of the characters were f***ing aliens

Oh please then where did he get the idea from?! Face it Lucas and 90 percent of white male filmmakers are racist douches who base their chararcters on real stereotypes. These images don't come out of thin air.

I didn't think Jar Jar was a racist stereotype. I just thought... oh look, he sounds kinda "islandy" caribbeany or something. WHO GIVES A FLYING FLIP?!? ALL actors and characters in ALL movies should have a strict southern Iowa accent. That way I can never get work again. Gee thanks. And I don't believe you have to have a Chinese man to play a male Chinese character. It's called acting. What should happen is someone should tell them they suck in that role go hire a dialect coach and do more character work. There is nothing wrong with using stereotypes in art really... It's when you don't even know it's there that you are probably screwing it all up. um yeah...
