50. 1960 Minnesota Golden Gophers
Coach: Murray Warmath
Best Player: Tom Brown
The late '50s weren't too good to the Gophers: between '57-'59 they went 7-20, including 1-8 and 2-7 campaigns in '58 and '59. What better way to bounce back than to go 8-1 and become national champions? The Gophers did exactly that, winning at Nebraska and Michigan and easily handling then-no. 1 Iowa at home. They were consensus national champs despite losing the Rose Bowl (the AP and UPI both conveniently did their voting before New Year's Day), but when you were 2-7 the year before and one of your linemen (Tom Brown) finishes second in the Heisman Trophy voting, you're still badass.
